Happy Blog-o-versary to Me!
I [can and] cannot believe that today marks my one year anniversary of starting Natural Selection! What is most remarkable to me is that last July 19th, I found myself sitting in front of my computer, sharing with you words of trepidation and anxieties about going natural with a head full of braids and today thinking about if I was making the right decision. And now, in front of the same computer, I’m writing up celebratory sentiments of pride and confidence with a large and in charge Lola perched on my head. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: the only regret I have about going natural (and starting to blog for that matter) is that I didn’t do it sooner!
This blog has not only been a fantastic way for me to process letting go of processed hair, but also a way to connect me to the greater natural hair community. Since I’ve started writing I have met some fantastic people – online and in person– and one thing is for sure: I’m just getting started!
Now as I look forward to the future of Natural Selection, I am seeing a lot of very exciting things on the horizon (some of which are already underway). Here’s a few that I want to share with you:
- First of all: a redesign of this site and a new logo! Yes, I know. It’s a cool logo, but I have been grappling with how to define natural and I feel as though that the above image doesn’t truly represent all that natural is! So keep your eyes peeled for that in the coming weeks.
- More Bay Area Natural Selection events. The next one is coming up on July 31st, but I’m planning on keepin’ em coming! So if you can’t make this one, there will be others.
- Collaborative projects with photographer Sasha Kelley. We started jamming out some ideas just yesterday and have some good stuff in terms of photo shoots and working with an artist collective. You’ll be hearing more about this as details firm up as well as potentially being asked to participate!
- Loc blogging. This ties into the above point that naturals aren’t just fros. I’m in the process of reaching out to some loc writers and youtubers who will be contributing their experiences and expertise on this matter. If you or someone you know fits the bill to be a writer for this, give a holler.
As you can see, there’s a lot going on over here (and a lot more…don’t want to give away all the secrets now)! If there’s anything you want to see more of /less of, please do not hesitate to let me know.
I just wanted to say thanks for reading because if it weren’t for all of the positive feedback I get from you, my readers, I wouldn’t enjoy this half as much as I do.
So here’s to the first year and more to come!
